Rob Newman

Rob Newman was thrown into the Bristol City limelight and never looked back. Whereas some youngsters sink without a trace, Rob established himself as a true City leader. Thrust into the spotlight out of necessity rather than anything else after the Ashton Eight ripped up their contracts in the fallout from the financial mess the club found itself in, this lad from Bradford-on-Avon went on to be a hero to the City fans and to become a shining light during the club’s darkest days. Happy to play in a number of roles, Newman earned a reputation of being a jack of all trades during his fledgling career. But it was in central defence that the accomplished Newman found himself at home. With his cultured passing and vision, he progressed to captain, where he led the team to promotion to Division Two in 1990. In total, Newman amassed almost 500 games for the Robins before being transferred to Norwich City for £600,000 in 1991. With the Canaries he played the top-flight football he had always wanted to achieve with Bristol City. Newman played over 200 games for the Canaries before finishing his career with Southend United, where he went on to be manager. After a stint managing Cambridge United and time as assistant manager at Bournemouth, Newman now heads up recruitment and scouting at Manchester City.
